Replace An Exhaust Manifold Gasket

An exhaust manifold gasket seals the exhaust to the engine block.2. Clean the mating surfaces of both the engine block and the manifold using a wire brush. Make sure that you remove all of the old gasket material. There cannot be any remaining material left on the mating surfaces.

Instructions

1. Scrape off the old gasket material from the mating surfaces of both the exhaust manifold and the engine block.

Typically, the only time you need to change the gasket is when you notice an exhaust leak. After you have removed the exhaust, you'll need to know the proper way to replace the gasket so that you do not end up with a leaking exhaust again. It is very easy to make a mistake when installing a new gasket.

3. Wipe down the mating surfaces with a shop rag.

4. Apply RTV sealant to both the engine block and exhaust manifold mating surfaces.

5. Set the gasket over the exhaust manifold and press it against the RTV sealant once the sealant is gummy. You will have about 30 seconds to 1 minute before the sealant becomes gummy. Then press the exhaust manifold to the engine block.

6. Thread the manifold to the engine block bolt and tighten them with a socket wrench.
