Change Battery Terminal Finish Plugs

Automotive batteries are sold in both top-post and side-post varieties.

Battery terminal confine adapters are used to associate automotive batteries to remainder of the vehicle's electrical system. These adapters are designed to clamp directly around or on the battery's positive and negative terminals. Terminal end adapters come in a side-post design (commonly used by GM) and a top-post design (used by Ford and other automakers). These adapters can corrode due to constant contact with battery acid and other caustic materials. This can cause the connection to the battery to be sporadic, reducing the amount of current the battery delivers to the vehicle's electrical system.

Instructions

1. Lift the hood and prop it open. Disconnect the negative terminal cable with a combination wrench. Disconnect the positive terminal cable.

Test the new terminal end adapters by starting the car.

3. Flatten the end of the cable and slide it into the clamping area of the new terminal end adapter. Use a combination wrench to tighten both sides of the clamp.

4. Repeat the process for the other adapter. Reconnect the positive terminal cable first, followed by the negative terminal cable.2. Note which adapter you plan to change first and observe how the terminal end adapter is connected to the cable. If the terminal end adapter features removable clamps, remove the adapter with a combination wrench. If the cable appears to be routed through the adapter, use a heavy-duty cable cutter to cut the cable as close to the adapter as possible.
