Install 1995 Mustang GT Struts
The 1995 Ford Mustang uses a modified McPherson strut suspension action congruous to the "Fox" intent Mustangs of the preceding period. While the steering angles where improved and low-friction ball joints are used in the 1995 Mustang, the replacement procedure for the struts remains the duplicate. This repair project can be handled by the standard familiar mechanic in a unusual hours, using basic help tools. The results Testament be a smoother, aggrandized precise, operate.
Instructions
1. Loosen the lug nuts on both front wheels.
2. Elevate and collar the Mustang using the floor jack and jack stands. Position the jack stands on the front subframe, away from the fender well.3. Remove the two slide pins that attach the front brake caliper to the steering knuckle, and lift the caliper off the rotor. Hang the caliper out of the way with a piece of coat hanger or other suitable wire or string, to prevent damage to the brake hose. Slide the brake rotor off the hub assembly to gain access to the lower strut mounting bolt.
Lower the car onto the stands. Remove the front wheels and lay the wheels and lug nuts away from the work area. Reposition the floor jack under one of the lower control arms and lift the control arm just enough to compress the coil spring slightly.
4. Remove the upper strut mounting bolt located under the hood in the center of the strut mounting plate, using the 13/16-inch socket and socket wrench from the 1/2-inch-drive socket set. Remove the two lower-strut-to-steering-knuckle bolts with a 1 inch socket (from the 1/2 inch drive socket set) and the breaker bar. When the bolts are loosened, a 1/2-inch-drive socket wrench can be substituted for the breaker bar to speed removal. Use a hammer to drive the bolts from the steering knuckle. Remove the strut from the fender well.
5. Insert the upper shaft of the new strut into the fender well of the Mustang, then slide the new strut into place on the steering knuckle and line up the bolt holes. Insert the strut bolts into the holes and start the nuts on the bolts. Compress the center shaft of the strut slightly, and line it up with the hole in the upper strut mount. Push the shaft into the hole, and start the upper nut onto the strut shaft. Tighten all three bolts very tightly to prevent shifting and noise. Repeat the process on the other side of the vehicle.
6. Reinstall the brake rotors and calipers. Tighten the caliper slide pin bolts securely. Reinstall the wheels. Lift the vehicle with the floor jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle. Pump the brakes several times to readjust them. Test drive the Mustang, and get an alignment at a qualified auto repair shop.
