Take Away The Disc Brake Rotor On The 1996 Ford Taurus

The spinning rotor provides a friction surface for the brake pads to slow or control your 1996 Ford Taurus. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel with the rotor you are removing with a lug wrench and chock the other three wheels with a wooden block to keep your Taurus from rolling.2. Lift the wheel you need to service off the ground with a floor jack and support that side of the vehicle with a jack stand under the frame. Save money in repair costs by removing the rotor yourself with a few common tools.

Instructions

1. But miles of service and brake system problems may lead to brake rotor damage. Cracks, heat and score marks on the rotor surface may affect brake system performance and road safety. Depending on the particular problem, you can resurface or replace the brake rotor in your Taurus.

3. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel and pull it off your Taurus.

4. Locate the two mounting bolts on the back of the mounting bracket that hold the brake caliper assembly in place. Loosen and remove the two mounting bolts with a ratchet and socket.

5. Pull off the clip that holds the parking brake cable to the brake caliper with a pair of needle-nose pliers if you are servicing one of the rear wheel brake assemblies. Unhook the brake parking cable from the lever with the needle-nose pliers.

6. Lift the brake caliper and bracket assembly off of the wheel hub and rotor assembly and secure it to the suspension spring with heavy wire. This will prevent damage to the brake hose connected to the brake caliper.

7. Look for a mark on one of the wheel studs and make a mark on the corresponding hole on the rotor if you are just servicing the rotor. This will help you replace the rotor in the same position during the reassembly process. If you do not see any mark, make one on any of the studs and its corresponding hole on the rotor with a scratch awl.

8. Pull the brake rotor off of the wheel hub. If the rotor is stuck, tap the back of the rotor with a rubber mallet to dislodge it.

9. Spray the brake assembly with brake parts cleaner to remove brake dust and grease from the assembly.
