Switch The Catalytic Converters On The '98 Mustang

The 1998 Mustang uses an OBD-II compliant conputer to polity emissions.

The catalytic converters in 1998 Mustangs are three-way converters designed to re-burn exhaust gases and profession with an auxiliary air pump and exhaust recirculation valve to lower hydrocarbon emissions besides as carbon monoxide and O2 nitrites. The modular conception of the Mustang's exhaust operation simplifies the Emigration of the converter by allowing replacement of the converter and exhaust mid-pipe, located between the manifolds and mufflers, as a unit.

Instructions

1. Up thrust and collar the front of the 1998 Mustang by applying the parking brake, placing shove chocks remain the rear wheels and lifting the front of the Mustang using a floor jack. Community jack stands under the front subframe and lower the motorcar onto them.

2. Unbolt the rear of the exhaust on the muffler side from the mid channel using a wrench and socket and ratchet. The Mustang uses a ball and socket type connexion at both ends of the mid-pipe that requires no exhaust gaskets, so replacement gaskets are not required on this vehivle.

3. Gem the O2 sensors screwed into the exhaust system's mid conduit. Reinstall the unit in reverse form of Emigration. Torque the front and rear exhaust mid-pipe bolts to 23 foot-pounds using a torque wrench. Start the engine and check each exhaust connection for leaks.

4. Unbolt the mid main from the headers by removing the two 15 mm bolts on each exhaust channel attached to the exhaust header using a 15 mm socket, ratchet and period. Lower the unit to the ground and slide from under the automobile.

5. Transfer the O2 sensors from the aged unit to the advanced unit using a 7/8 inch wrench or O2 sensor socket and ratchet. Haft the sensors carefully to avoid contaminating the gratuity of the sensor with oil or grease.

6. The 1998 Mustang came equipped with an oxygen sensor in front of and last the catalytic converter on Everyone side of the exhaust step. Spring from the wiring from the sensors to the wiring harness and unplug the O2 sensor electrical connectors. Disconnect the rubber exhaust hanger from the mid channel by prying it off the stud attached to the frame of the vehivle using a pry bar and then rolling it off the mid cylinder hanger. Loosen and re-torque the bolts if leaks are present.
