There are two types of mechanically driven fans that are commonly used in cars. One is held on with four bolts and the other is held on with one bulky follower. The fan clutch with a substantial stone has a threaded nose on the H2O pump pulley and the peanut is on the fan side--attached to the fan clutch. It basically aloof screws on to the nose of the pulley. This type requires the especial tools listed. The fan clutch is located on the fan, which is located on the water pump.
Instructions
1. Using the appropriate 3/8-inch socket and ratchet remove the bolts in the fan shroud to allow removal of the fan. Remove the fan shroud by lifting it up and out of the vehicle. It may be necessary to remove the top radiator hose to allow the shroud to come out.
2. Using the appropriate wrench, remove the four nuts that hold fan to the water pump pulley. Grab the fan and pull forward with a rocking motion and remove the fan from the vehicle.
3. To remove the fan held on with a single large nut, insert the lockdown tool around the bolts on the pulley to hold it in place. Replace the fan and shroud in reverse order of removal.
Use the appropriate socket and ratchet to remove the four bolts holding the clutch to the fan. The four bolts are in the center and easy to identify. Install the new clutch in the same direction and tighten the bolts.
5. Use the large 1 1/16-inch wrench (or other size if necessary) to turn the nut counter-clockwise to loosen. Once it is broken loose, it can be spun off by hand.4. Place the fan on the floor with the shaft up.
