1996 Toyota Land Cruiser Heater Core Installation

The 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser is a four-wheel-drive SUV. The heater core is a radiator that warms the passenger cabin. Instructions

Remove the retaining screws in the passenger-side footwell with a screwdriver. Clear the glove compartment, pull in on the walls of the glove box and pull up to remove it from the vehicle. Remove the revealed screw on the left side of the glove compartment.


4. Pull out on the passenger side dash panel until the rear can be accessed. Disconnect the electrical connections on the back. Remove the dash panel.


5. Open the radiator cap to release the pressure in the coolant lines. Place a drain pan under the radiator plug. Remove the radiator plug by turning it counterclockwise with a socket wrench, allowing the radiator to drain.


6. Loosen the hoses on the heater core by turning the retaining screws counterclockwise with a flathead screwdriver. Disconnect the hoses.


7. Remove the three mounting bolts securing the heater core to the firewall with a socket wrench. Remove the heater core.


8. Place the new heater core in position and tighten the mounting bolts clockwise with a socket wrench. Replace the hoses and tighten the hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver. Replace the dash panel, connect the rear electrical connections and install all the screws. Install the glove compartment and dash trim.


9. Replace the radiator plug and tighten it clockwise with a socket wrench. Fill the radiator with a mixture of half coolant and half distilled water. Reconnect the negative battery cable and start the vehicle. Allow the coolant and water mixture to circulate for two minutes, then fill the radiator again. Replace the radiator cap.
