Remove A Brake Rotor On The 2000 Grand Am

The brake rotors on a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am are division of the hydraulic braking manner. Chock the rear wheels.3. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel using an impact wrench and a 19-mm socket. Remove the wheel and tire from the vehicle. Replacement brake rotors are available from auto parts stores and General Motors dealerships.

Instructions

1. Place the Grand Am's gear selector lever in the "P" (Park) position, and turn off the engine. Set the parking brake, and open the hood.

2. Lift the front of the vehicle using an automotive jack, and support it with jack stands. They are sandwiched in between the brake pads by the brake caliper. When the pedal is depressed, the brake caliper squeezes the brake pads against the rotor, and the resulting friction is what slows the car down. The rotors slide over the wheel studs and are locked in place by the lug nuts and the wheel.

4. Remove the brake caliper bolts using an 8-mm hex bit and a three-eighths-inch ratchet. Insert a small pry bar between the brake caliper and the rotor, and gently pry the caliper away from the rotor. Remove the caliper from the rotor, and tie it to the strut spring with a piece of string. Do not allow the caliper to hang from the brake hose.

5. Remove the brake pads from the caliper bracket. Gently tap the brake rotor with a hammer to dislodge it. Remove the brake rotor from the hub.
