Repair An Air Mattress Pump On The Corvettes C4

The A.I.R. injector pump, or smog pump, appeared on the Chevrolet Corvette in the 70s to governance emissions. The pump operates by injecting air into the exhaust stream to burn residual fuel left in combustion gases. The C4 corvette used an A.I.R. pump mounted on the front of the engine with a serpentine zone and quantity of rubber hoses connecting it to the exhaust development, the air filter and administration valves. The pump is a light vane pump to compel the air for the manner. The pump can be cleaned and lubricated, on the contrary replacement vanes and bearings are not happily available.

Instructions

Removing the Air Injector Reactor

1. Apartment the vehicle on a Apartment lodgings, equable, iron surface. Allot the emergency brakes and community trundle chocks extreme the rear wheels. Concede the engine to chilling. Settle on safety glasses and gloves. Expansive the hood and establish the A.I.R. pump. It sits on the left side of the engine, on a bracket above the competency steering pump and to the appropriate of the alternator.

2. Loosen the three bolts on the A.I.R. pump pulley with a socket, on the contrary discharge not remove. Using the serpentine sash object, remove the serpentine belt. With a socket wrench and regular wrench, remove the long bolt holding the alternator bracket on the A.I.R. pump. Remove the bolt holding the support strut that attaches to the intake manifold.

3. Finish removing the A.I.R. pump pulley. Remove the lower bolt that is holding the A.I.R. pump to the bracket with a socket wrench. Remove the last bolt on the rear of the bracket, the rubber hose from the outlet tube, and remove the A.I.R. pump from the bracket.

Repairing the A.I.R. Pump

4. Rotate the shaft of the pump and note any binding or noises. With a screwdriver carefully pry by rocking the silver aluminum pulley support off of its shaft. Then carefully pry the black plastic air vent off the shaft. Remove the four bolts on the back with a socket wrench. Carefully separate the rear plate from the pump. Remove the rear plate.

5. Inspect the drum on the inside of the A.I.R. pump housing. There is a drum on the inside with graphite impregnated vanes coming through. If any of the vanes are broken, the pump must be replaced. Do not forcibly rotate the drum with the rear plate and shaft removed or the vanes will be damaged.

6. Soak the whole pump in mineral spirits or a part washer. Clean out all the old grease. Blow out and dry with compressed air. Lubricate the shaft's rear bearing and cams inside the drum with hi-temp bearing grease. Carefully replace the rear plate by working the shaft back through the cam bearings. Rotate the front shaft while holding the rear plate. If there is any binding at this point, replace the A.I.R pump.

7. If the A.I.R. pump rotated without binding, paint the case with Aluma Blast and let dry. Paint the bolts, pulley, and plastic air vane with Underhood Black. Reinstall the four rear plate bolts and tighten. Check rotation again. Reinstall the black plastic air vane by rocking on shaft and then the pulley spacer by the same procedure.

Installing the A.I.R. Pump

8. Install the A.I.R. pump on its bracket and outlet rubber hose, and replace large bolt at the bottom of bracket. Replace the top bolt and then tighten the two bolts.

9. Check all bolts for correct torque. Remove the chocks. Test drive the car, listening for noises and checking engine performance.

Replace the support strut and bolt and tighten. Replace the alternator bracket and tighten the long bolt and nut.10. Reinstall the serpentine belt using the serpentine belt tensioner tool.
