3. Remove the bolts that mastery the valve covers in district on the heads, and remove the valve covers. Loosen all 16 of the ball nuts that hold the rocker arms. 4. Remove the distributor cap and make note of the rotor position. Remove the base bolt and pull out the distributor. Remove all of the nuts that fasten the intake manifold to the head. Lift off the manifold with the carburetor still attached. Remove all of the exhaust manifold to head mounting nuts.


5. Remove all of the head bolts. Do this by loosening each a little at a time, and use a circular pattern as denoted in the service manual. Set the bolts aside. Organize them so each can return to its hole. Take the heads to a machine shop and have the technicians perform a valve job, check the mounting surfaces for warping and resurface if necessary.


6. Scrape the old gasket material off all mounting surfaces. Lay the new head gaskets in place and set the heads on them. Reinstall the head bolts and torque them according to the procedure detailed in the service manual. Replace the push rods in their respective holes, set the rocker arms on the push rods, and torque the ball nuts to the specification in the service manual.


7. Place the new exhaust gaskets on the heads. Replace and tighten the exhaust manifold nuts.


8. Place the new intake manifold gaskets on the heads, and set the intake manifold in position. Reinstall and tighten the intake manifold mounting nuts. Reinstall the distributor and tighten its base bolt and replace the distributor cap. Reconnect the upper radiator hose and tighten the hose clamp.


9. Place the new valve cover gaskets on the mounting surfaces on the heads, and set the valve covers in place. Replace and tighten the valve cover bolts.


10. Reconnect all of the lines and linkages to the carburetor. Reinstall the breather and install and tighten the breather wing nut. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
